A woman “had her car washed Saturday by the Madera South girls volleyball team. They’re raising money for activities. I asked how much each girl had to contribute, and they said only $100 per girl, per team. My daughter is on the Madera High girls volleyball team and the varsity is expected to come up with $750 from each girl for varsity and $550 per girl for J.V.

“Why is there such a difference between these two teams when they are both in Madera? I don’t understand where all this money is going to. Would someone please answer this question.”

A woman “wanted to thank Leon Emo for his great article on Cayucos and the Cass Home. My husband and I spent many years enjoying that area. It is nice to see the Cass House is finally finished.” She “also wanted to thank Bill Coate for his wonderful article on Carole Sordi. I enjoyed going to wrestling matches with her and Doug. She will be missed.”

“We’re finally getting a train station at Road 26 after 12 years,” said a woman. “Now when are the city and county of Madera going to get together and start a real recycling program? We need to get there.”

“I love the Tribune’s Red Line,” said a lady. “Our little town is a great place. There are people who take the time to call the Red Line and express themselves on all subjects. We have the freedom to do so. Let’s pray for peace in our town, no matter what our beliefs, so we may continue to express our opinions and the ability to discuss our views and have them printed.”

A man said, “There’s a lot controversy about the Ellis Street overpass and the amount of money involved.” He was “wondering why they don’t take that money and use it on an Avenue 16 overpass by Farnesi’s. Then they could use the extra money to repair the roads.”

“All political signs are supposed to come down after the election in June,” said a woman. “John Silva, take down your sign at Avenue 17 and Walden (Avenue). People are tired of looking at it.”

Another caller remarked on a political sign at Sunset Avenue and 4th Street. “Some Jeff Denham supporter ought to get rid of that,” she said. “Don’t they have fines for political signs left up after so long? If so, Denham is probably owing the city a lot of money.”

A man called on the recent Proposition 8 ruling. “When they told us to vote yes on that Proposition 8, they told us if we didn’t vote yes they would make our kids homosexuals in school. So, when school starts next week, are they going to be teaching my young ’uns how to be gay?”

Another woman said, “This thing about gays protesting equal rights and citizenship referring to the Constitution is not about citizenship. It’s about morals. No respect for the rest of the world. If God had only made one sex you and I wouldn’t be here.”

A lady said she “was calling on behalf of some senior citizens at the Pan-American Senior Center.” The first thing she mentioned was that people who had vouchers were giving them to other people. She also said some people never got an application for the Brown Bag program.

“Then, the commodities that were supposed to be given out today weren’t given out. What is happening at Pan-Am? Is it happening at the Bergon (Senior) Center also? Who’s in charge?”

“I am very much against the casino,” said a woman. “I think it’s wrong. I think it’s a load of crap. Considering this isn’t the tribe’s land, as we have all heard, what’s it going to take for someone to wake up? Are they going to take someone else’s land saying, ‘Oh, we lived here too.’ What about downtown? What about where the new courthouse is going to be? They could say this was our land.”

About “the TV Guide that comes out on Saturday,” said a lady. “The weekday morning shows are always shown in error because you show what is actually at 1 p.m. I’d rather see this left blank than give false information. Can you possibly do something about this?”

A lady said she “had called about the same subject three or four times. I hoped that Cal-Trans, or whoever is responsible for putting the pedestrian lines (crosswalks) downtown, (would do something). They did a nice job painting the fire zones on the curb. I wish someone would paint the crosswalks because they are very faded.”

A person identifying himself as “Granada (Drive) resident” said, I urge all residents to write to the City Council to stop the increase of the speed limit. People walk and ride bikes along the roadway. They should put a stop sign at Granada and National (Avenue), and also put traffic lights at the Granada and Howard Road intersection. It’s an accident waiting to happen.”
