Letter: Vacant house vexes a neighbor (April 29)
I am a 78-year-old widow living on the west side of Madera. Unfortunately, there is an abandoned house next to me that is causing several problems.
Recently, I awoke to find a homeless man wandering around in my backyard. When I approached him, he told me he was living in the house next door. I asked him to leave, and when he didn’t I called the Madera police.
In the meantime, the gentleman who provides my lawn care arrived. The homeless man had gathered his belongings and started to go up the street. He was confronted and told not to come back.
When the officer came back to my property he spoke to Chris, who is the owner of Kelsey’s Yard Service, and requested that he mow the lawn next door. Since then, every two weeks Chris has done just that.
I cannot find who the owner is and whom to get in touch with, but it has been a frustrating problem. The fact that the property is an eyesore and is attracting vagrants worries me. I just want the problem solved but do not know whom to turn to.
The fact that Chris is donating his time and labor to see that the lawn is taken care of shows me that there are still good neighbors and I wish there were more of them.
Marilyn Kuzma,
Madera
