While I'm all for voting the current senators out of office for many reasons which include their positions on domestic energy policy, I have to admit the elimination of off shore oil drilling is too drastic of a measure at the current time for one simple fact caused by many wrong decisions. We have allowed ourselves to become too dependent on foreign oil sources and from many countries that are not pro-Amercian, although being pro-US Dollar. Decisions to protect our environment by congress and presidents have been outpaced by our ever growing demand for oil, hence we outsourced it. While conservation and gains in efficiency are good, could we have harvested oil in ANWAR with less environmental and socioeconomical risks? I'm no petroleum or environmental engineer, but cleaning up a spill in ANWAR surely would be simpler than approximately a mile under sea level. Furthermore, wouldn't there much less displacement of peoples lives and wellbeing up there in the mostly frozen North? Lastly, would anyone taking the position to eliminate domestic drilling actually quit driving their car for a pelican on the Gulf of Mexico?...even a Prius driver? Let's be true to heart with our sacrificial answer on this one.
