“I’m glad someone liked the music,” a lady said, referring to the Sunday concert in the park by a rock and roll band a couple of weeks ago. “As far I am concerned, last Sunday (featuring a Celtic band) was music. It brought the Irish out in me.”
A lady called to complain about “seven or eight Mexican families in one house. The people would rather rent to them (that is) until they see the damage they do. They rent to them because they can jack the rent up higher.”
A man wanted “to comment on a classified ad that was in the paper Monday (August 11) in regards to unlicensed contractors. It really bugs me that the city is actually telling people that are unlicensed contractors to put their city business license (number) on their truck. It is giving a false impression that these people are licensed contractors. There is a misconception, and these people are actually committing fraud. It is really tough times for us people that are licensed contractors that have our bonding and insurance and legal contractor’s license and” he added, “a city business license.”
The caller also suggested the “Madera County at Work photo on the front page should show a licensed contractor at work.”
A lady who was walking her dog in Town & Country Park last week said, “I saw homeless people working alongside Parks people cleaning up our park. What a great idea, and it just goes to show you that the homeless want to help out too.”
“The world does not want (Barack) Obama,” suggested a frequent caller. “Basically, they probably would prefer the lady. The lady has already capitulated, but stranger things have happened. I would not be surprised to see the lady put forth as the Democratic candidate.”
Several callers referred to “the editorial (actually a Red Line call) in today’s paper (Tuesday, Aug. 12) regarding the lady who mentioned that Mexicans had good-looking cars and that all black and white people walking around are homeless. Maybe that’s because they refuse to do the hardworking jobs the Mexicans are doing.”
Another lady said about the same subject: “Maybe if the black people and white people who are homeless would work out in the fields like Mexicans, sweating their butts off, maybe they could be driving a nice car too and even get a home.”
“I don’t know what makes these people think that just Mexicans are illegal immigrants,” began a woman. “There are a lot of other races of different countries that are here illegally. They are not of Mexican descent.”
A lady “wondered if it was possible to have a police officer posted to ticket people who are crossing the street in the middle of the block on H Street.” She “assumed they are probably employees or attorneys. They are crossing and we have to stop for them. Instead of walking down to the legal crosswalk where we only have to stop once, but not at the corner of H Street where we have to stop twice.”
A woman wanted to “thank the street maintenance crews. The fresh painting of curbs and the streets improve the looks of the city and neighborhoods. Thanks for the good job.”
A man asked about the lady caller last week “who was driving down Yosemite Avenue and looking at all those ugly colors of the buildings and seeing all those illegals hanging around doing nothing. All of a sudden she follows them around the corner and watches them urinate. Doesn’t she have better things to do?”
A lady said, “about all the (previous) calls about the Farmer’s Market. “I agree, it is really sad that they allow all these illegals and their children. I agree, they should bring out the Border Patrol.”
A woman called to comment on her son’s experience at “the community pool. He swam three or four times a week,” she said. “It is too bad that school starts so early. The days I attended with my 7-year-old, the lifeguards did a great job, and he had a lot of fun and made new friends with kids of all colors.”
In response to a letter from Erin Farinelli complaining about the park’s condition, a visitor to the Red Line online —self-identified as “Park Questions”— writes in part, “People I have met at the park lately have no respect anymore, and they tend to pass that on to their children, making it hard, leaving those of us that have morals and value in an awkward space when wanting to pass on the good things about our community to our children or visitors.”
Another commenter on the same letter, self-identified as “Jose,” writes, “You are right. Parents should be role models. So next time you go to the park and see trash on the ground, pick it up and throw it in the trash. Put together some kind of Clean the Park day and get the community involved.”
